Operation School Bell®

Data from the Texas Education Agency indicates that approximately 32.4% of the enrollment in the Conroe Independent School District is economically disadvantaged and their families have inadequate resources to meet the needs of their children. To address this need, Operation School Bell provides new school clothing for economically disadvantaged children in pre-kindergarten through 6th grade for all public schools in Montgomery County and the 7th and 8th grades in selected schools. School counselors refer children to this program, and the children have the opportunity to shop for new clothing during July and August prior to the start of school. Since the need continues after school starts, school counselors may refer students for assistance throughout the school year.

From June 2011 through May 2012, Operation School Bell provided clothing and shoe vouchers to 4,733 students in the six Montgomery County independent school districts and Met Head Start programs.

In addition, clothing vouchers are given to counselors at Montgomery Youth Services shelter homes and the Women’s Center for the emergency dressing of children.

Members of this committee also participate in Dr. Seuss Reading Day.  Members go into local schools where they read Dr. Seuss stories to promote a love of reading.
