Operation School Bell®
Operation School Bell is the signature Program of National Assistance League, as well as every chapter of Assistance League across the nation. Through the collaborative efforts of our Assistance League and local department and other stores, children in Montgomery County receive new clothes and shoes.
Data from the Texas Education Agency indicate that a high percentage of the enrollment in Montgomery County schools is economically disadvantaged, and their families have inadequate resources to meet the needs of their children. To address this need, Operation School Bell provides new school clothing for economically-disadvantaged students in kindergarten through high school who have been referred by Montgomery County school counselors. The students attend “shopping events” at local stores, where they have the opportunity to shop for new clothing during July and August, prior to the start of school. Since the need continues after school starts, school counselors may refer students for emergency assistance throughout the school year. In addition, shoe vouchers are given to each student to purchase shoes and socks.
This Program also provides elementary children and schools with book donations, in-school Dr. Seuss reading opportunities and Kids on the Block puppet presentations. During the 2015-2016 fiscal year, almost 7,000 students were served.
